ROSE COTTAGE GARDENS
Our World of Roses
There's something deeply personal about my connection to roses. When I arrived as the fifth child in our family, my father chose the name Rosalie, inspired by my mother's boundless love for these magnificent blooms. "My little Rosebud," he would say, a term of endearment that would shape my lifelong passion for these extraordinary flowers.
My earliest gardening memories are filled with the sweet perfume of roses, learning at my mother's side as she tenderly cared for her prized rose garden. Those precious moments among the thorns and petals weren't just gardening lessons–they were life lessons in patience, nurture, and the remarkable rewards of dedicated care.
Today, at Rose Cottage Gardens, we continue this legacy of rose cultivation, sharing not just our expertise but also the joy and wonder that comes from growing these timeless beauties. Whether you're an experienced rosarian or just beginning your journey with roses, you'll find that these magnificent flowers have an extraordinary ability to transform any garden into a haven of color, fragrance, and romance.
From classic hybrid teas to the nostalgic charm of David Austin roses ( a Rose Cottage favorite), each variety tells its own story and holds its own promise. Join us as we explore the enchanting world of roses, where every bloom reminds us that beauty, like love, flourishes with careful attention and tender care.
Let us guide you through the art and science of rose gardening, sharing generations of knowledge and the simple pleasures that come from nurturing these remarkable plants.

The Rose: The History of the World's Favorite Flower
Told Through 40 Extraordinary Roses
By Brent Elliott
The Royal Horticultural Society's The Rose tells the story of the world's favorite flower through 40 of the most popular and interesting species and hybrids.
Arranged chronologically, The Rose brings to life the arrival of each flower in European gardens, detailing the history of the layout of rose gardens and the role that roses play in the 'language of flowers'.
From the first recorded reference to a rose over 7,000 years ago, these extraordinary flowers have captivated botanists, artists, poets, perfumers, and gardeners.
A symbol of love and patriotism, a scent and flavor synonymous with the East, and the jewel in the crown of ornamental gardens, roses in all their forms bear a special meaning that spans centuries and crosses oceans.
Extraordinary botanical illustrations and extracts from classic texts held in the Royal Horticultural Society's world-famous Lindley Library, such as Redouté's Les Roses, Henry Andrew's Roses, Mary Lawrence's Selection of Roses and Victor Paquet's Choix des Plus Belles Roses, complete this authoritative celebration.
Floriography: An Illustrated Guide to the Victorian
Language of Flowers
By Jessica Roux
A charming, gorgeously illustrated botanical encyclopedia for your favorite romantic, local witch, bride-to-be, or green-thumbed friend.
Floriography is a full-color guide to the historical uses and secret meanings behind an impressive array of flowers and herbs. The book explores the coded significances associated with various blooms, from flowers for a lover to flowers for an enemy.
The language of flowers was historically used as a means of secret communication. It soared in popularity during the 19th century, especially in Victorian England and the U.S., when proper etiquette discouraged open displays of emotion. Mysterious and playful, the language of flowers has roots in everything from the characteristics of the plant to its presence in folklore and history. Researched and illustrated by popular artist Jessica Roux, this book makes a stunning display piece, conversation starter, or thoughtful gift.
Redouté: Roses; the Complete Plates 1817-1824
by
Pierre-Joseph Redoute (Photographer), H. Walter Lack (Author)
The revered tradition of botanical illustration dates back to the Renaissance. It emerged from the desire to catalog nature in its unpredictable splendor, and the process demanded the most precise and talented of artists.
With a remarkable skill that captured the most intricate subjects in nature, Pierre-Joseph Redouté is widely considered the best painter and engraver of botanical illustration. Working from live plants rather than from the herbarium specimens gave his watercolors unusual subtlety and freshness. He was also an innovator in printing techniques, introducing "stipple-engraving" to France, always striving for greater exactitude in his art. Redouté fortuitously acquired some of the most influential patrons of the time, including Marie Antoinette and Empress Josephine Bonaparte, thus ensuring that his work was well-funded and displayed.
His impressive collection comprises over 2,000 paintings of plants rendered with great accuracy and strict adherence to nature. In this exquisite edition of Les Roses, Redouté turns his attention to the most romantic, desirable, and evocative flower. Originally published in three volumes between 1817 and 1824, it remains his most famous and celebrated work.
